Yellowstone cutthroat spawning assist project

Fellow Fishers-

I thought it might be interesting to offer a chance for some of you to help move spawning cutts around the culvert obstructions to fish migration this spring. Many of you know that Henry's Lake is one of the strongholds for the Yellowstone cutt. We have a half dozen or so tributaries into Henry's Lake that offer some spawning for the fish. Most of the tribs are cut-off for spawning due to the low water conditions and draw downs of the lake for the past two irrigations seasons.

The fish have a rough time negotiating the mud-sand  flats that the lowered lake has created. They can get into Targhee and
Howard Creeks in fairly high numbers but large spawning areas are not open to the fish because of the poor construction of highway culverts on both streams. Henry's Lake Foundation and the F&G have tried several ideas with no success on these tribs. The DOT is planning to re-build these bridges in a few years and this will eventually solve the problem. This year we decided with the F&G to capture and move the spawners past the obstructions.

We need four volunteers for three hours on each of the following days; May 26, 29, June 2, 5, 9, 12, 16, 19, and 23. So, if you missed your chance to get wet, cold and fish-smelly last fall below Island Park Dam, here's your ticket! Anyone interested in volunteering please e-mail me with your available date(s). I'll get back to you with the schedule in plenty of time. Thanks.
