1/11/05 update
The Utah Council and Stonefly Society Chapter have been working on conservation activities in the watershed over the past few years. Activities have included a new trail foot bridge on the trail above the end of the road. Students with the University of Utah's Bennion Center (photo above) assisted in trail construction and stream bank stabilization that eliminated sediments entering the stream where Bonneville cutthroat spawned. The SLC Dep. Of Public Utilities has completed two bridges over the upper City Creek above road's end and these also help control bank erosion from visitor use. The Dept. also installed a new control gate at the entrance to the watershed, which has been designated the City's Wildlife and Nature Preserve. The Dept. was given an Award of Merit by the Utah Council for its cooperative participation and management of the watershed. Director LeRoy Hooten and his staff received individual plaques for their outstanding service to conservation of the watershed and especially recognition of the Bonneville cutthroat trout in the watershed.
TU volunteers have also used "xmas trees" anchored into stream banks to prevent erosion from high water or flood events and helps stabilize aquatic habitat for the fisheries (add photo-sent separate.). Additional activities and cleanup is planned for the spring and summer of 2005.
